Mamas Bolognese

The perfect base for lasagne or to fly solo with spaghetti, suitable for all the family this recipe is always a hit in our house.

Shopping List

  • 500g lean beef mince
  • Kallo beef stock cubes
  • 2 tins lidl Italiamo chopped tomatoes
  • Tomato purée
  • Fresh or frozen mixed peppers
  • Fresh or frozen chopped onion
  • Dried mixed herbs
  • Fresh basil
  • Worcester sauce
  • Tabasco sauce
  • Granulated sugar
  • Instant coffee
  • Dried parsley

Method

Brown mince in a large saucepan and crumble in one Kallo low salt stock cube

Add one cup of chopped onion and one cup of chopped mixed peppers – cook mixture over a medium heat for approximately 10 minutes or until mince has cooked through

Add a few dashes of Tabasco & Worcester sauce

Add two tins of chopped tomatoes & two tablespoons of tomato purée. At this point I usually add two teaspoons of granulated sugar, this reduces the acidity of the tomatoes and created a much softer tasting bolognese

Add two teaspoons of dried mixed herbs and fresh basil leaves to taste (I add 12 but I LOVE basil)

Finally, add two teaspoons of instant coffee (trust me on this one)

Simmer on a low heat setting for 30 minutes and serve with slightly al dente spaghetti. Finally, dust with a teaspoon of dried parsley.
